Native American Art: MFA Highlights

The collection of Native American artworks is one of the hidden treasures of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with some of its finest objects seldom displayed to ensure their preservation. This volume presents 100 of these little-known works, many reproduced for the first time. Although some objects were made for Native use, many reflect the interaction of Native Americans with other cultures, and demonstrate a mastery of new materials and techniques in weaving, silversmithing, beadwork and other crafts.

The Female Gaze

The Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women is a collection at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) of approximately 400 works of art ... by over 150 artists. The collection includes works by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Joan Brown, Viola Frey, Ana Mendieta, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Christina Ramberg, Betye Saar, Kiki Smith, Nancy Spero, and Beatrice Wood among many others.... The book breaks new ground in scholarship on its topics, takes risks with interpretation, and uses the broad themes and wide array of artists represented in the collection as a starting point for reflections on the history of the feminist movement, individual artists, and regional identities.

May Morris

May Morris, youngest daughter of influential designer William Morris, was one of the leading female contributors to the Arts and Crafts Movement. She ran the embroidery department of her father's famous firm Morris & Co., and had a successful freelance career as a designer, maker, and exhibitor, founding the Women's Guild of Arts in 1907 and undertaking a lecture tour in the United States between 1909 and 1910. May's approach to embroidery was innovative and widely influential in the UK and abroad, yet her important contribution to embroidery is often overshadowed by the accomplishments of her more famous father.
