Open Education Refresher Workshops
Whether you are new to open education or an experienced practitioner, Open Maricopa would like to invite you to attend our Spring 2023 webinar sessions covering the basics of open education and how open pedagogy might be applied in the classroom. Each 90-minute virtual workshop is offered either in 45-minute installments on Monday and Tuesday or back-to-back on a Friday.
These workshops are open to the public.
These separate events are each approved for 1.5 hours of Faculty Professional Growth for Maricopa Residential Faculty. Please register for each event individually. Also note that each event is comprised of two parts and that faculty must attend both parts 1 and 2 of the event in order to qualify for FPG. Faculty who attend parts 1 and 2 of both "The Why and How of Open" and "Opening Pedagogy" are therefore eligible for 3 clock hours of FPG.
The Why and How of Open
This refresher seminar will provide an opportunity for both those
experienced and those new to open education to explore the rationale behind “open” education, how
open licensing works, how to find OER, and how to design effective open materials.
Through presentation, guided discussion, and activities, participants will:
1. Define “open educational resource,” describe the difference between “free” and “open” in the
context of open licensing, and list the “5Rs” of open
2. Explain why open education has emerged as a discipline since the late 20th century
3. Identify and describe the four basic requirements of Creative Commons licenses
4. Describe best practices for designing open materials
5. List major repositories of OER
The workshop is divided into Part 1 and Part 2. To be eligible for 1.5 clock hours of faculty professional growth, Maricopa residential faculty must attend both parts 1 and 2. Each part of the workshop is offered twice during the week.

F Sessions:
1 - Friday, April 14, 12:00-12:45pm
2 - Friday, April 14, 12:45-1:30pm
Opening Pedagogy
Learn about how renewable assignments can engage students directly in the curation and
creation of global knowledge, empowering their voice and developing their digital and cultural literacies.
Faculty participants will discuss the promise, potential, and pitfalls of opening pedagogy, as well as review
a variety of examples of renewable assignments.
Through presentations, guided discussion, and brainstorming, participants will:
1. Describe various definitions of “open pedagogy”
2. Describe the differences between disposable and renewable assessments/assignments
3. Explain how open pedagogy can empower student voice
4. Develop a plan for implementing renewable assessment/assignment in the classroom
The workshop is divided into Part 1 and Part 2. To be eligible for 1.5 clock hours of faculty professional growth, Maricopa residential faculty must attend both parts 1 and 2. Each part of the workshop is offered twice during the week.
