Introduction

For your group project you must verbally cite at least 5 sources in the body of your paper:

1. Two must come from scholarly communication studies journals.

2. One source must be your textbook.

3. Your last two sources can be from a magazine, newspaper, blog, or non fiction radio or television broadcast and/or a non fiction film.

This guide will focus on how to find scholarly journal articles in communication studies.

    Finding Scholarly Communications Studies journals

The most efficient and effective way to find scholarly articles from Communication Studies is to use a database.

    Most useful databases:

    Communication and Mass Media Complete

    Academic One File

    JSTOR

    Academic Search Premier

    Google Scholar

    •  MAKE SURE TO USE THE FOLLOWING LIMITS IN YOUR SEARCH: PEER REVIEWED AND FULL TEXT TO FIND SCHOLARLY ARTICLES

    • You can broaden the search to find magazine and newspaper articles in addition to scholarly articles by unchecking the "Peer Reviewed" box.

Another way you can find scholarly communications journal articles is to search a specific journal itself, rather than an entire database. However it is a less efficient way to search. Below are individual communications studies journals that can be searched:

    Communication Research Trends

    Cross Cultural Communication

    Global Media Journal

    International Journal of Communication

Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media

    Journal of Intercultural Communication

    Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly

    Women's Studies in Communication

    Searching Tips

    • Put quotes around phrases (ex: "social networking")
    • Put OR between groups of synonyms
    • Put AND between key concepts
    • Put parenthesis around groups of synonyms
